The Imperative of Being

Elevating Personal Agency and Meaning
Created by Joanne Shank, M.Ed. — Educator • Speaker • Facilitator

The Imperative of Being invites us to become better acquainted with our own lives and the possibilities within them. It begins with the inherent value of each particular life: what we experience, what matters to us, and the ways we can connect, create and contribute.

I created this curriculum to help individuals deepen their understanding of themselves and their experiences, develop practical personal and relational skills, and use that learning to enrich their lives, relationships and work.

Personal agency within real life

Personal agency is the capacity to have a voice, make considered choices and participate within our real circumstances. Our health, energy, responsibilities, relationships and available support all matter. Learning can help us recognize possibilities and develop capacities we can draw on in everyday life.

Two complementary strands

Deepening our relationship with our own lives

This strand explores attention and connection with life, self-knowledge and care, understanding experience in context, beliefs and expectations, personal meaning, and conscious participation. Curiosity, pleasure, creativity and possibility belong alongside difficulty and uncertainty.

Cultivating peace, compassion and love

This strand develops personal and relational capacities: understanding emotions, communicating clearly, respecting boundaries, responding thoughtfully to conflict, listening with care, and expressing love in ways that honour our own and other people's dignity and individuality.

Learning through inquiry and experience

Learning begins with a question, experience, interest or possibility that feels relevant. Through explanation, reflection, creative exploration, conversation and practice, participants can try a response, notice what happens and adapt what they learn in their own lives.

The curriculum welcomes individuals of all genders. Offerings can be adapted to a particular audience or setting, with room for different experiences, capacities and ways of participating. Participants retain choice over their pace, personal meaning and what they share.

The Imperative of Being provides the foundation for my talks, workshops, guides and developing learning programs. Each offering focuses on selected questions and capacities.

You may encounter the earlier name, The Damselfly Path, in existing articles and resources. The Imperative of Being is the current name for this evolving body of work.

For organizations and groups

I offer talks and interactive workshops that help employees, members and community participants develop practical emotional and interpersonal skills for life and work. Areas of focus include communicating clearly, navigating challenges, strengthening relationships and cultivating meaning and purpose.

Together, we identify a focus that fits your group’s needs, with opportunities for participants to reflect, practise and apply their learning to situations they encounter in their personal and professional lives.
